When you smile, the whole world smiles…

There is an old saying that when you smile, the whole world smiles with you. People love to see someone smile because it conveys happiness. A smile makes people believe that you are confident in what you are saying and believe in what you are doing. Your smile is part of what creates your first impression and, often, first impressions are lasting impressions.

There are many ways to obtain a beautiful smile. Proper oral hygiene, healthy dietary habits, regular visits to the dentist, and sometimes Orthodontic treatment all play a role.  In fact, many times, a beautiful smile is the outward sign of successful Orthodontic treatment. However, successful Orthodontic treatment is indicated by more than just a gorgeous smile because there are many more factors an Orthodontist must consider.

What is Orthodontic Treatment?

Orthodontic treatment is not a quick fix! It is a complex, biological process, which involves changes in the position or growth of the jaws, and involves protecting the gums and facial muscles while the teeth are moved into their new positions. With so many important components to manage, treatment should only be performed by a specialist in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, commonly known as an Orthodontist.

What is an Orthodontist?

An Orthodontist has to be a Dentist first! After completing the four years of Dental School training, a dentist has to obtain an additional 2.5 to 3 years of training in an accredited Orthodontic residency to be considered an Orthodontic Specialist. Because the very foundations of the face and mouth are at stake, it is vital that patients seek treatment from a qualified professional.

How do you know if you need braces?

When you come to us for a consultation we will start with a thorough examination of your teeth and mouth to determine if you need braces. If we recommend starting treatment with us, we collect dental records such as x-rays, photos, and models of the teeth. From this detailed information, your orthodontist will develop a custom treatment plan with your specific concerns in mind. You will be advised of the recommended treatment, how long it is expected to last, and steps your must take as a patient, such as keeping scheduled appointments and proper hygiene, to reach treatment goals.

How often do you see your Orthodontist?

Because orthodontic treatment is such a complex process, even the most carefully planned treatments should be monitored regularly to ensure treatment is on course. Through regularly scheduled visits your Orthodontist has the opportunity to evaluate tooth movement and oral health and make adjustments, in a timely manner. Appointments are scheduled approximately every six weeks.

Getting braces is definitely a commitment. However, orthodontic treatment can provide you with results that can change your life; better function (chewing, biting, speaking), a beautiful smile, and more confidence.
