Oral Cancer Month is Next Week… Do I need a Screening?

Not so fun fact, Oral Cancer is one of the highest risks for death among common cancer types. The Oral Cancer Foundation reports that almost 50,000 Americans are diagnosed each year with Oral Cancer. The scarier fact is that there is an average of 9,750 deaths each year caused by Oral Cancer. Though those facts are unsettling, Oral Cancer is often successfully treated if caught in the stages. That is why it is vital to get screenings by your dentist once every three years if you are over 20 or once annually if you are over the age of 40. Initial signs of Oral Cancer typically appears in the mouth tissues and often goes unnoticed. The change is very slight, but can easily be noticed by a dental professional.

So what is an Oral Cancer Screening? At Hudec Dental we use a Velscope to perform the screening. Recognized by the World Health Organization in 2009 as a commercialized medical device that addresses global health concerns and is accessible to low and middle-income countries, the award-winning VELscope is among the world’s most widely used adjunctive devices for the enhanced visualization of oral mucosal abnormalities, such as oral cancer or pre-malignant dysplasia.

At Hudec Dental we are a family-owned business and we treat our patients like our family. Throughout the month of April, we will be providing free Oral Cancer Screenings to all patients in honor of Oral Cancer Awareness Month. Call one of our offices today to schedule your free screening today!
